MakeUseOf: Welcome our new Guest Writers

Wooo! That’s me (and another guy)! I’m excited… are you?

Good news, we finally got our first guest writers. They are both unique, follow makeuseof, love the web, and surpass all my expectations. Check them out below and please give them a warm welcome.

Adam Hirsch

Adam Hirsch

“I’m a down to earth working man who likes to cook, watch good tv/movies, listen to music, ‘chill’, go out when the occasion arises. I’m a sarcastic fun-loving, people-loving, animal-loving fool who also can give endless massages. www.TheFattyTalks.com.

Go to Adam’s profile and it won’t take you long to figure that he is social to the core. We also happen to have almost identical blogrolls. So, I have no doubt he will be able to share some cool stuff with you guyz. He is planning to write about

  • “ I Make Use Of ” - tools he uses
  • “ The Other Lists ” - list of tools (Top 5, 10, etc.)
  • “ I Would Use “- tools he would use if he had use for them

Mark O’Neill

Mark O'Neill

“My name is Mark, I’m British and now living in Germany. I am a freelance writer, blogger, editor, English teacher and internet addict. I am also a regular contributor to Wikipedia , a book proofreader on Project Gutenberg and an audio book narrator on Librivox ” - www.BetterThanTherapy.net.

I am excited to have Mark, as not only is he a professional writer but also one of those who is at the core of what we know as user-generated content. We all love Wikipedia and yet only very small amount of users bother to expand, correct or question authenticity of specific facts or articles. He is also our long time reader and stumbler. Mark is planning to start of with some of his favorite apps.

Ok, That’s all from me, rest you’ll learn on the way.

Looking forward to your posts.

Note1: MakeUseOf.com recommends StumbleUpon. It’s not a promo we just really love it.
Note2: Telling you about Free tools is fun but started to get expensive, so feel free to Contribute (via PayPal).

I Don’t Own a Single Pair of Jeans

Oddly enough, my clothing style is exactly like my blogging style, because honestly, I don’t own a Single Pair of Jeans, and I only wear suits on occasions. Thus, I am officially and metaphorically a “Khaki Blogger”

Thanks to the anonymity of the Internet, your readers have no way of knowing what you?re wearing as you write. The tone and content of your writing, however, affects the reader?s perception of you just as much as your clothing would if they met you face to face. So what is your writing saying about you? If I read your blog, would I envision you in a suit & tie, khakis, or pajamas?

Suit & Tie Bloggers

Suit & tie bloggers are out to impress. Plugged in to the information that matters, they are the expert voices of their niche. They give their readers the facts, news, and developments that really matter. Their writing is formal and succinct, free of bias and absolutely packed with useful information. These bloggers usually have another full time job, and they share professional experiences coming from their field.

Khaki Bloggers

Khaki bloggers straddle the middle ground between expertise and personality. They showcase facts and opinions, giving their readers a unique but informed perspective of their niche. Their writing has the feel of a newspaper columnist, inviting discussion and educating at the same time. Unlike suit & tie bloggers, they aren?t afraid to ask questions. This balanced approach allows khaki bloggers to attract a more diverse audience than their professional and casual analogues.

Pajama Bloggers

Pajama bloggers project personality through their writing. They tell stories, engage their readers, and share their feelings. Their writing may play hard and fast with the rules of good grammar at times, but it flows in a very natural way. Readers can relate to pajama bloggers, so they feel more at ease to communicate. Thus, pajama blogs enjoy a higher degree of interaction than their more professional cousins.

So, which kind of blogger are you?

Suit & Tie, Khakis, or Pajamas?

New Layout and New Sponsors

First, 2 Sidebar layout… Ads… Opinions? Back to 1 Sidebar? Ads at the bottom?

As for Sponsors, well, they are not really Sponsors, they are ads served by Share A Sale, which I kind of enjoyed browsing through their catalogs with some decent companies. Unlike Good Adsense, which is boring and not always related to my page, categories, posts or topics (ie, the “Fatty Tumor” ad, does not go with the “Fatty Talks”… boo Google on that one).

But here they are, let’s give them a big hand… and press the links… and buy stuff from them…

Cornell University has got it Going On

The Insignia of Cornell University

So, I was going to do a post on interesting facts and figures of Cornell University, but honestly, there is way too much information. WAY too many Marks of Distinction, Historical Facts, Famous and Infamous Graduates of Cornell.

So here’s a small snippet:

Founded 1865 By Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White.

Forty Nobel laureates have been affiliated with Cornell as faculty members or students. The 2006?07 Cornell faculty included 3 Nobel laureates, a Crafoord Prize winner, 2 Turing Award winners, a Fields Medal winner, 2 Legion of Honor recipients, a World Food Prize winner, an Andrei Sakharov Prize winner, 3 National Medal of Science winners, 2 Wolf Prize winners, 5 MacArthur award winners, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 2 Eminent Ecologist Award recipients, a Carter G. Woodson Scholars Medallion recipient, a Presidential Early Career Award winner, 26 National Science Foundation CAREER grant holders, a recipient of the National Academy of Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research, a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Academy Award in Literature, a recipient of the American Mathematical Society’s Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement, a recipient of the Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, a recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Earth and Environmental Science, 2 Packard Foundation grant holders, a Beckman Foundation Young Investigator grant holder, and a NYSTAR (New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research) early career award winner.

Graduates of Cornell are known as “Cornellians”. As of August 2005, the university counted 244,276 living Cornellians

If you follow any of the 3 links, you will be overwhelmed with accomplishments and achievements of Cornell and their Alum. Take that (everybody else)!

First and Only Summer Vacation

image

I’m off for the weekend to Ithaca, New York home of the Gorges, Cornell University (my college!), hills, waterfalls, bridges, smart people, dirty hippies,  one of the Finger Lakes and yes, Collegetown Bagels

Why they don’t open up a Collegetown Bagels in New York City, I’ll never know. It would do well with hipsters, meat eaters, vegetarians, parents, kids, business-type people. Someone feel free to steal the idea and open one soon, in New York, Preferably Upper East Side. Thanks.
