Looks like I picked the wrong weekend to go to Ithaca, not only am I missing the New York Greenfest, which whatever that is, is sure to be fun and nature/hippie/dirty/granola filled. More importantly, the Perseid Meteor Shower is peaking this weekend, and Ithaca definitely has a hell of a lot less light pollution compared to New York City. Unfortunately, the only meteors I shall see will be on the Interweb. Alas.
But for everyone else, enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower, according to Wikipedia: The Perseids (PURR-see-idz) are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. However, they can be seen all across the sky. Because of the path of Swift-Tuttle’s orbit, Perseids are mostly visible on the northern hemisphere.
The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking about August 12. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches a hundred or more per hour.
